The Baroque Stair

This study recreates the spatial baroque stair through the investigation of the medial surface. Medial surfaces are created by producing a 3-dimensional voronoi determined by the infinite subdivision of a space curve - essentially, what occupies the void of the product. Here, the curve represents the trajectory of human movement through space. The space curve serves as a collection of points for the cellular packing of the 3D voronoi, thus producing a discretized planar composition known as a medial surface. With the goal of producing a stair with level treads, the design of the space curves (in many cases, a helix), was calibrated such that it was always doubled. The vertical doubling of the curve produces a higher resolution subdivision of the medial surface, resulting in level treads reminiscent of stairs.
